Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in Burlington & Ontario

CBT helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Together, we look at the patterns that show up when you're anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck and start practicing new ways of responding.

How your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours connect.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based, present-focused approach that explores the connection between your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviours. Understanding how these parts influence one another can help identify where change is possible.

CBT is collaborative and practical. You and your therapist work together to understand the patterns contributing to what you're experiencing. This might include noticing automatic thoughts and underlying beliefs, identifying cognitive distortions, looking at the role of avoidance or other behaviours, and testing different ways of thinking or responding.

An important part of CBT is learning to step back from thoughts rather than automatically accepting them as facts. This isn't about replacing difficult thoughts with positive ones. It's about looking more closely at your interpretations, considering the evidence, and developing perspectives that are more balanced and flexible.

CBT also focuses on behaviour. Avoidance and other ways of managing discomfort can bring short-term relief while keeping a problem going over time. Behavioural experiments, reducing avoidance, and practicing new skills can create new learning that goes beyond simply understanding the problem.

At Ascend, we use CBT as a framework, not a script. We adapt it to the person in front of us, what they're experiencing, and what will actually be useful.

CBT At Ascend

CBT can provide structure, but therapy shouldn't feel like you're working through a manual. We adapt the approach based on what you're experiencing, your goals, and what will actually be useful for you.

Some sessions may involve identifying thinking patterns, behavioural experiments, or practicing skills, while others may need more space for emotion, reflection, or understanding the bigger picture. When appropriate, we also integrate approaches such as ERP, ACT, and attachment-focused therapy.

You don't need to know which approach you need before you reach out. Your therapist can help you make sense of what's going on and determine what treatment may be the best fit.
